USA Gymnastics to pursue all legal avenues to keep Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal

USA Gymnastics to pursue all legal avenues to keep Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal

New Delhi: USA Gymnastics is keen to explore all possible options to ensure that Jordan Chiles keeps the bronze medal she was initially awarded in the floor exercise event at Paris Olympics.

Chiles was awarded the bronze medal after USA Gymnastics appealed for a review of a decision, which was upheld and she jumped from fifth to the third spot.

It ensured a podium finish for Chiles, which was objected by Romania. They pointed out a scoring dispute and filed a lawsuit at Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The CAS ruled that Romania’s Ana Barbosu will be upgraded to the bronze medal spot from fourth after a re-evaluation of scores of Chiles.

But USA Gymnastics it won’t let the matter end there and will seek efforts to ensure that Chiles remains the bronze medal winner.

“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal
Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan.”

In its judgement, CAS had said that the appeal by Chiles’ was lodged four seconds after the one-minute stipulated time limit for scoring inquiries.

USA Gymnastics has raised a dispute with CAS’ ruling, claiming to have submitted video evidence to CAS showing that its appeal was made 13 seconds before the deadline.

Now the dispute could land in Switzerland’s highest court, the Swiss Tribunal, or the European Court of Human Rights.
