New Delhi: Usman Khawaja etched his name in history books with a landmark maiden double hundred in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Coming on the back of a poor series against India at home, Khawaja redeemed himself with a magnificent knock. Khawaja completed his double ton on the second day of the Galle Test and helped the visitors reach 475/3 at Lunch on Day 2.

Khwaja and Smith (141) added 266 runs for the third wicket to put Australia in cruise control. Smith, who breached the 10000-run milestone and notched up his 35th Test ton on Day 1, was dismissed by Jeffrey Vandersay in the morning session on Day 2. Vandersay has been the pick of the bowlers for the Islanders with two wickets to his name so far.

Milestone double ton for Khawaja

It was a landmark moment in Khawaja’s career as he became the first Australian to score a double hundred in Sri Lanka. The previous record for the highest score by an Australian in Sri Lanka was held by Justin Langer who scored 166 at Colombo. Damien Martin is third on the list with 161 runs followed by Darren Lehmann (155) and Steve Smith (145).

Meanwhile, Josh Inglis celebrated his Test debut with a superb fifty. The wicket-keeper batter, who moved to Australia with his family in 2010, brought up his maiden fifty in just 51 balls.

Earlier on Day 1, Smith reached the 10000-run milestone in 115 matches and became the second-fastest batter to reach the milestone by surpassing the likes of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Joe Root, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara and Younis Khan.

Smith became the 15th batter to score 10000 or more Test runs and the fourth Australian to reach Mount 10k.
