Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: Rituals, meaning and auspicious timing

Mumbai: Vat Savitri Vrat, a deeply revered festival among married Hindu women, will be observed on Monday, 26 May 2025. Rooted in ancient mythology and practised with devotion across various parts of India, the fast is observed by women praying for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. The vrat is symbolic of unwavering love and strength, drawing inspiration from the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan.

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi during the month of Jyeshtha begins at 12:11 PM on May 26 and ends at 8:31 AM on May 27. Women observe a day-long fast on this date, performing rituals beneath the sacred Vat (banyan) tree, which is believed to be the dwelling place of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Known by different names across regions—such as Badamavas, Bargadahi, and Vat Amavasya—the vrat is seen as a prayer for eternal marital bliss and family well-being.

Rituals and Customs

On the day of the vrat, women rise early during Brahma Muhurta, take a holy bath, and offer water to the Sun. Adorned in traditional clothing and jewellery, they clean the area around a banyan tree and begin the puja. The ritual includes lighting incense and lamps, performing seven circumambulations around the tree, and reciting the Vat Savitri Katha. The worship concludes with offerings of food and charity to the poor or local temples.

Spiritual Meaning and Regional Importance

Vat Savitri Vrat is more than a religious observance—it’s a heartfelt tribute to the strength of a woman’s love and the sacred bond of marriage. Devotees believe that the vrat not only blesses them with a happy married life but also supports their desire for children. The banyan tree, symbolising resilience and fertility, plays a central role in the rituals, as it is said to house the divine presence of the Hindu trinity.
