Vinesh Phogat scripts history, becomes first Indian women wrestler to march into Olympic final

New Delhi: India’s ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat has stormed into the finals of the women’s freestyle 50kg event as she defeated Yusneylys Guzmán Lopez 5-0 at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday. She has scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to enter an Olympic final.

She began her campaign on Tuesday itself and has now registered three wins on the bounce, giving India hopes of another medal at the Summer Games 2024. She first defeated reigning gold medallist and four times world champion Yui Susaki of Japan 3-2 in the pre-quarterfinal of her category and went on to register another win in the quarterfinal against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 to qualify for the semifinal of the event and meet Guzman in the last four-stage.

Her win against the legendary Susaki was a major upset as she defeated a player who didn’t drop a single point in her gold medal journey of four bouts at the Tokyo Olympics 2022.
