New Delhi: Team India superstar Virat Kohli’s prophecy about South Africa batter Aiden Markram seems to have come true. Markram slammed a magnificent unbeaten century during South Africa’s second innings on Friday to put them on the cusp of a historic victory against Australia in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. The Proteas are now within touching distance of clinching their maiden ICC trophy.

Markram scored an unbeaten 102 off 159 deliveries as he combined with skipper Temba Bavuma, who scored a gritty half-century, to help South Africa post 213/2 on the board in pursuit of the 282-run target on Day 3 of the WTC final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 143 runs for the third wicket to take South Africa closer to victory.

Markram, who slammed his eighth ton in Test cricket, became the first South African batter to score a century in the final of a major ICC event. After his stupendous ton put South Africa on the verge of their maiden ICC title triumph, Kohli’s old tweet on Markram went viral on social media. Back in 2018, Kohli had heaped praise on Markram after his batting heroics for South Africa.

In March 2018, Kohli took to Twitter to praise Markram after the South African batter played a terrific knock of 84 runs against Australia in the Newlands Test. Kohli was left impressed by Markram, who was a rising star back then. “Aiden Markram is a delight to watch,” Kohli wrote in a tweet. The India star also posted another tweet for Markram, appreciating the South Africa batter.

Can Aiden Markram guide South Africa to maiden WTC title?

Markram and Bavuma’s batting heroics have put South Africa on the cusp of glory in the WTC 2023-25 final; however, the job is far from done yet for the Proteas. South Africa need 69 runs to win the final, and the onus will be on the set pair to take the team over the line when they resume South Africa’s second innings at Lord’s on Saturday.

Markram and Bavuma batted exceptionally well in South Africa’s second innings to share an unbeaten stand of 143 runs for the third wicket to help them finish with 213/2 at stumps on Day 2, 69 runs away from victory. Having notched up a splendid ton, Markram will be hoping to continue his stellar run with the bat on Day 4 and take South Africa to victory.
