New Delhi: Shubman Gill reckons his century in the second Test against England bolstered self belief considerably and made him a better player in red-ball cricket.
The rigt hander struck 104 runs in the second innings of the Visakhapatnam Test in February to help India win by 106 runs. Gill had managed scores of only 23 and 0 in the first Test in Hyderabad that India lost by 28 runs and made 34 in the first innings of the Visakhapatnam game.
It was his 12th innings without a half century that raised question marks over his place in the Indian side. He made his debut in the five-day format in the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy, making a mark with 259 runs in Australia.
But it was followed by only 838 runs in his next 34 Test innings at an average of 26.18 with two centuries and two half centuries, leading to increased pressure in Gill to keep hi place in the Indian side that had lost the first Test in Hyderabad.
Turnaround
But Gill turned it around with a battling hundred that also helped India fight back and eventually win the five-match series 4-1.
“That was a big confidence boost for me, especially after losing the first Test match. Quite a few players were unavailable, so there was pressure on us to win the series,” the top order batter told Jio Cinema, adding that playing in a five-match Test series was a rewarding experience.
“I had never played five Test matches before, so it was a good experience and exciting to feel that intensity. Even after getting breaks following two Test matches, we never dropped that intensity.”
Gill shook off his poor start in the series to be the second-highest run scorer with 452 runs from nine innings, averaging 56.50 with two tins and two half centuries, following up his century with scores of 91, 52* and 110 in the next three Tests.
