New Delhi: The second ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Thursday, February 14 witnessed a bizarre moment when Adam Zampa grabbed a sensational catch on the boundary to dismiss Sri Lanka’s Nishan Madushka.

It was a moment of complete madness as Zampa nearly made a blunder, but some quick thinking helped him regroup and complete a stunning catch to send Madushka back to the pavilion for 51 runs.

The dramatic incident occurred during the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Ben Dwarshuis bowled a half-tracker and Madushka attempted a hook shot. However, he failed to time the ball as the top edge flew toward Adam Zampa at deep fine leg.

Zampa caught the ball right at the edge of the boundary but the momentum took him closer to the rope and nearly cost Australia a crucial wicket. The leg-spinner nearly made a blunder of touching the rope with the ball in his hand but got out of the trouble with a split-second decision by tossing it into the air just as he was about to touch the rope. His foot made contact with the boundary cushion just as he completed the catch and the decision went upstairs.

After multiple replays, the third umpire confirmed it was a clean catch, as a 98-run partnership between Madushka and Kusal Mendis finally ended to send relief to the Australian camp.

Mendis, Asalanka power SL to strong total

Sri Lanka were off to a dismal start after winning the toss and opting to bat first as Aaron Hardie struck early, dismissing Pathum Nissanka for just 6 runs off 20 balls. However, Madushka and Mendis stabilised the innings with a 98-run stand.

Mendis carried on after Madushka’s dismissal and completed his fifth ODI hundred and first against Australia in the 44th over. Skipper Charith Asalanka, a centurion of the opening ODI, smashed a swashbuckling half-century, finishing unbeaten on 78 off 66 balls as Sri Lanka scored 97 in the last 10 overs to post a strong total of 281/4 on the board.
