New Delhi: Indian grandmaster D Gukesh got even with Norway’s Magnus Carlsen as he defeated him for the first time in a classical game, in Round 6 of the Norway Chess, in Stavanger on Sunday. The victory was emphatic as Gukesh capitalised on a late error by the world no. 1 to take himself third on the leaderboard, only a point shy of joint leaders Carlsen and American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana.

Soon after the match, a moment caught major spotlight as the two players came up with different reactions. Within seconds of the finish, Carlsen was evidently frustrated while Gukesh was seen just soaking it all in. The moment Carlsen realised he was done, he banged his fist on the table, which sent the chess pieces into disarray. He shook hands with Gukesh before placing all the pieces back on the board and walking away in a huff, not before patting the winner on his back.

The incident has gone viral on the internet with fans across the world giving their opinion on whether what Carlsen did was justified or if he could have controlled his emotions. Whatsoever be the case, it is quite clear that in a game like chess, such heat-of-the-moment instances are quite usual and it is the players who get to have the actual experience of their nerves getting wracked and their adrenaline getting boosted when they face such a situation during a game.
