WATCH: Gautam Gambhir expresses confidence to win Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia

New Delhi: Head coach Gautam Gambhir is not thinking about the past results ahead of the blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia starting on November 22. Gambhir addressed the media ahead of the team’s departure to Perth, the venue of the first Test between the two countries. India and Australia will face off in a 5-match series for the first time since the inception of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Indian team will enter the series on the back of a humiliating 0-3 series whitewash at home against New Zealand. The home humbling has put India’s World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes in jeopardy. The Australia series presents a tough test for India to get their WTC campaign back on track. Rohit Sharma’s men need to win at least three of the five matches on the tour Down Under and also hope other results go their way.

While Gambhir is aware of the importance of the series, he is overtly worried about the tough test and wants to treat BGT as any other series.

Gambhir also defended under-pressure skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli and backed them to bounce back in Australia. Gambhir said the veteran pair is still “incredibly hungry” to perform.

Gambhir also shrugged off the theories of being under pressure after India’s home humiliation against the Kiwis with reports circling of his differences with the selection committee.

Meanwhile, the former India opener also indicated that KL Rahul could be asked to open the innings in place of Rohit, who is doubtful for the first Test in Perth due to personal reasons.

Star batter Kohli has already reached Perth well ahead of the rest of the Indian team, which is set to reach Australia on Monday.
