New Delhi: Janik Sinner came up with a great gesture for his rival Alexander Zverev after beating the German in the Australian Open 2025 final to successfully defend his title at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Sunday. Sinner became the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles as he bagged his second consecutive Australian Open crown with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Zverev in the final.

In a touching moment, Sinner was seen consoling an emotional Zverev and embracing him before the trophy presentation ceremony at the Rod Laver Arena following the conclusion of the men’s singles final. The 23-year-old also put his hands around his opponent’s shoulders and said a few words to motivate him as he comforted him after his defeat.

It appeared as if Sinner was telling the German that his day would come soon and that he needed to keep going. The 23-year-old’s gesture won hearts on social media as many lauded the Australian Open champion for showing class in comforting his opponent after his victory. Zverev has in the past opened up about his mental health struggles and his inability to win his maiden Grand Slam despite being one of the best players in the world at present.

Playing his third Grand Slam final at the Australian Open 2025, Zvererv was looking to become the first man from Germany to win a major title since Boris Becker in 1996. However, he failed to go the distance once again as Sinner shattered his dreams with a clinical display in the final. Sinner thrashed Zvererev 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the lop-sided contest to become the first player since the legendary Rafael Nadal to successfully defend his first Grand Slam crown.

Keep believing in yourself: Sinner tells Zverev

Sinner came up with a lovely message to lift the spirits of Zverev after his defeat in the final as he urged the German star to keep believing in himself. Sinner lauded Zverev for his performances over the years and advised him to keep working hard to realise his dream of winning his first Grand Slam title.

“You’re an amazing player, keep believing in yourself because I think all players, coaches, whoever is involved in this sport knows how strong you are – not only as a player, but also as a person,” Sinner said for Zverev in his post-match speech.

“So, keep it up, keep working hard, because we all believe that you can lift one of these very, very soon,” he added.

Sinner was dominant in his three-set demolition of Zverev in the final on Sunday as he won the match without facing a single break point. He became only the fourth player after the likes of Pete Sampras (Wimbledon 1995), Roger Federer (Wimbledon 2003) and Rafael Nadal (US Open 2017) to win a Grand Slam final without facing a break point.
