New Delhi: American sprinter Noah Lyles stormed to victory in 9.79sec to clinch a gold medal in a thrilling men’s Olympic 100m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Lyles made a late surge to pip Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and win a dramatic race by just 0.005 seconds.

The world champion won in the closest Olympic 100m finish in modern history to break Jamaican hearts at Stade de France.

Both Lyles and Thompson were given the rounded-up time of 9.79sec but the former’s name carried the all-important (.784) to Thompson’s (.789.)

The historic win made Lyles the first American, male or female, to claim 100m Olympic gold since Justin Gatlin won the event in the 2004 Athens Games.

Huge accomplishment for Noah Lyles winning Gold for team USA in the 100m men’s final! Noah is a 200m runner traditionally and he just won in the 100m.

In the Netflix docuseries Sprint, Noah joked with his mom and said “the 200 is my wife and the 100 is my mistress.”

Thompson had thought he had done enough to win the gold but replays showed Lyles had won in a photo-finish.

Lyles said of the wait for the final results: “I went up to Kishane and I was like, ‘I’m going to be honest, bro, I think you had that one’.

“And I was fully prepared to see his name pop up and to see my name pop up, I’m like goodness gracious. I’m incredible.”

While Lyle’s winning time was his personal best, Thompson, was just a tad slow from his season-best timing. The Jamaican entered the race as the fastest man this year with a best of 9.77sec.

Lyles’ American compatriot Fred Kerley claimed bronze in 9.81sec, just one-hundredth ahead of South African Akani Simbine, who finished with a time of 9.82sec.

Such was the standard of the race that the defending champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy could only finish fifth in 9.85sec ahead of sixth-placed Letsile Tebogo of Botswana in 9.86sec.
