New Delhi: Rohit Sharma was honoured with a special memento before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The former MI skipper recieved a special tribute for his remarkable journey in the cash-rich league, which began in 2008.
Rohit followed in the footsteps of his Team India teammate Virat Kohli, who was felicitated with the ‘IPL 18’ momento by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Roger Binny, during the opening ceremony of IPL 2025 on March 23.
Almost a month later, Rohit also recieved the ‘IPL 18’ memento from Binny.

Rohit’s remarkable IPL journey
Rohit’s IPL journey began in the inaugural season with the now-defunct franchise Deccan Chargers. The iconic Indian batter won the title with the Hyderabad-based franchise in the second edition of the tournament in 2009 and moved to the Mumbai Indians in 2011.
Rohit’s spell with Mumbai has been one of the most successful in the history of IPL. He enjoyed an unprecedented period of success in the next 10 years by becoming the backbone of the MI batting line-up. Rohit further cemented his legacy as an iconic player for the franchise by leading the side to five titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020) in seven years. His tactical acumen and laidback attitude, and calm demeanour helped Mumbai become a dominant force in the league.
Rohit, however, has failed to fire in the ongoing season. The former MI captain and the current Indian Test and ODI skipper was excluded from the starting XI and was named as an Impact Player for the second successive match. Rohit had also featured as an Impact Sub in the previous match against Delhi Capitals.
While Rohit’s main trait is his unselfish batting, MI, by keeping him out of the playing XI, are not utilising his leadership skills and proven tactical sharpness.
