New Delhi: Angel Di Maria called time on his 16-year international journey with Argentina Argentina on July 15, the day after their Copa America 2024 victory. The Argentine winger received a moving tribute ahead of Argentina’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chile at the Estadio Mas Monumental.
Di Maria has made significant contributions across four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022) for Argentina. He even played a crucial role during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and ultimately helped his side clinch the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The ceremony featured a video montage with messages from former great players and Messi himself, acknowledging Di Maria’s exceptional career with Argentina.

In an emotional tribute video, Di Maria was moved by his captain and friend Leo Messi’s words as he congratulated the 36-year-old on his illustrious career. Messi said, “I hope you enjoy this evening a lot with your family and loved ones. We have said everything we needed to say…We shared so much, and who would have thought it would end this way? We’ll miss you a lot. See you soon.”
During the tribute ceremony, the whole stadium erupted in a stand ovation for Angel Di Maria as he was called out. The players formed a guard of honor for him and his family. He thanked the crowd and his family for their support. Later on, the Argentine side lifted him high into the air in celebration.

He played a crucial role in securing the long-awaited continental trophy as he scored a decisive goal against Brazil cementing his status as one of Argentina’s most iconic players. Amidst growing interest from Saudi clubs, Di Maria joined Benfica in 2023 and helped them qualify for UEFA Europa League knock-out round play-offs.
