New Delhi: Water birth is a childbirth process where a woman in labor is immersed in a warm water tub, promoting a more soothing and pleasant experience during delivery. This popular birth technique is gaining traction across the country. However, there is a criteria for this wonderful technique, and may not be recommended to everyone.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Leena Das, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon & Fertility Specialist, Ankura Hospital for Women & Child, Bhubneswar, spoke about water birthing, its benefits and eligibility criteria.
Are you eligible for water birthing?
Doctors say that water birthing can be done in the following cases:
Full-term pregnancy and labor that is induced naturally after 37 weeks of pregnancy without any complications
Low-risk pregnancy with no health problems for the mother and the baby
Not having pregnancy-related complications like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes or even bleeding disorders
It is a good option when the mother is carrying only one baby, the baby is in a head-down position and there is no complication like amniotic fluid leak.
The benefits of water birthing for the mother
This process helps the mother to relax without causing any pain. It provides a comforting environment for the mother. It also aids in improving blood flow to the uterus. Moreover, a perineal tear (an injury to the tissue around your vagina and anus that can happen during childbirth) is a common occurrence during vaginal birth. However, immersing the body in warm water enhances the elasticity of the perineal tissues, thereby making the delivery safe without any cuts or tears.
The mother will also be able to maintain appropriate blood pressure and resume anxiety. The stress hormone is reduced and endorphins are released that are pain-inhibitors. There are easy movements during water birthing. This process also provides much-needed privacy to the mother during the delivery, an important phase of life. Pregnant women want their babies to take birth in a calm and safe environment.
What are the benefits of water birthing?
As the water birthing provides a calm environment for the baby, the baby can be smoothly delivered. The baby is also able to breathe normally as it gets the necessary nourishment and oxygen via the placenta and umbilical cords. Mothers should not fear, water birthing is safe and has no complications for the mother and her newborn.
The decision to opt for water birthing depends on the pregnant woman and her family. Pregnant women must consult an expert, discuss water birth, and then make informed decisions.
