New Delhi: Former UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski has hinted at a potential next fight with an announcement set to be made soon. The Australian mixed martial arts (MMA) professional has said that he has hit the training camp as he has learned who will be his next opponent.
This has led many to believe that The Great may fight against Ilia Topuria once again after going down to him in the second round knockout loss at UFC 298.
The Volkanovski-Topuria rematch speculation
Volkanovski has told his fans that he will continue to fight notwithstanding the recent losses and is expecting UFC to confirm his next fight, which is widely assumed to challenge the Georgian-Spanish Topuria for a featherweight title.
“Hopefully, fight announcement soon. We’re in camp; we’ve been in camp for a while,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel.
This means that Dana White, the UFC CEO, will be under pressure to clear on the popular query whether Topuria will defend his featherweight title or move to the lightweight division to face Islam Makhachev.
Even after losing heavily in the knockout against Topuria at UFC 298, Alexander Volkanovski is keen to fight Topuria and dethrone him. In February last year, Topuria ended The Great’s five title defences in a course of four-year period. The El Matador applied a powerful right hook to achieve his first championship.
“Of course, he’s going to think that,” said Volkanovski.
“He’s coming off two KO victories, and he’s going to feel unstoppable. He’s undefeated. So he’s going to feel like that until I show him,” he added.
Recently, UFC middleweight fighter Bo Nickal said that Topuria would be defending his title at UFC 314 in Miami. Topuria considers Volkanovski as a major threat even after his victory over the Australian at the Honda Centre, to extend his unbeaten run to 15 fights at that stage.
