New Delhi, India: In a heated exchange during today’s Senate hearing, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas sharply criticized Secret Service leadership over what he described as “catastrophic security failures” at recent political events, particularly the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Cruz’s scrutiny was directed at Acting Secret Service Director John Rowe, who defended the agency’s response while acknowledging challenges in fulfilling all security requests.
“Regarding the rally in Butler, all assets requested were approved,” Rowe asserted in response to Cruz’s questioning. However, he admitted that there were instances where requested assets were unavailable, necessitating the deployment of state and local law enforcement tactical units to fill gaps.
The exchange intensified when Cruz accused the Biden administration of politicizing the Secret Service, to which Rowe emphatically responded, “Secret Service agents are not political.”
Cruz further pressed Rowe on why candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was not granted Secret Service protection earlier in his campaign, to which Rowe explained the procedural requirements involving Capitol Hill for such decisions.
The Texas senator also raised concerns about Secret Service resources allegedly being diverted from Trump’s rally to an event involving First Lady Dr. Jill Biden in Pittsburgh on July 13. Rowe refuted these claims, clarifying that only one agent at a local airport handled logistics for both arrivals.
The discussion pivoted to the size of President Biden’s and former President Trump’s security details. Rowe committed to providing Cruz with specific agent numbers for both, emphasizing differences in security requirements for sitting and former presidents.
“I will get you that number so you can see it with your own eyes,” Rowe assured Cruz, aiming to address lingering doubts about resource allocation and operational transparency within the Secret Service.
