New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants’ hopes of qualifying for the play-offs of IPL 2025 hung by a thread after they crashed to 37-run loss to Punjab Kings.
LSG won the toss and sent PBKS in to bat after which Prabhsimran Singh smashed a 48-ball 91 and put together a 78-run stand with skipper Shreyas Iyer (45).
It was the foundation on which Nehal Wadhera (16), Shashank Singh (33) and Marcus Stoinis (15) built a overbearing score of 236 for five.
In their chase, Ayush Badoni’s 40-ball 74 could only take LSG to 199 for 7, which meant they slumped to their sixth defeat in 11 games and slid to seventh in the 10-team standings with 10 points in 11 games.
Punjab rose to the second spot with 15 points in 11 matches.
Speaking after the match, LSG captain Rishabh Pant observed that they paid for dropping catches and the bowlers gave away too many runs.
“Definitely too many runs. When you drop crucial catches at the wrong time, it can hurt you badly. We thought it would do more, but we did not pick the length right at the start. But that is part and parcel of the game.
“The dream is still alive. If we can win the next three matches, we can definitely turn around and do amazing things,” he said.
LSG’s top-order failed to fire in their big run chase, with Pant himslef bit being able to produce a big knock so far in the innings.
Asked if they would look to change the batting order in their next game, he said, “It makes sense when your top order is batting well. Every match, you cannot hope for them to come off. It is part of the game, we have to take it deep sometimes.
“We had too many runs to catch up on and that hurt us badly.”
