‘We expected the pitch to do more’: Captain Shan Masood justifies playing four pacers in 1st Test

New Delhi: Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets on Day 5 of the first Test and scripted history in Rawalpindi on Sunday, August 25. This was Bangladesh’s first victory against Pakistan in the history of Test cricket.

Chasing the target of 30 runs, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islan took their team over the line in 6.3 overs. Pakistani batters failed to handle the pressure created by the Bangladeshi spinners in the second innings.

Earlier, Pakistan declared their first innings for 448/6. In reply, Mushfiqur Rahim scored 191 runs as Bangladesh posted 565 runs in the first innings. Masood and Co. trailed by 117 runs, but Pakistani batters struggled against the spin bowling. Mohammad Rizwan showed some intent and scored 51 runs but didn’t get much support from other batters.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up four wickets and Shakib al Hasan took three wickets. The second Test will start on next Friday in Rawalpindi and Pakistan will look to level the series at home.

‘Anticipated the pitch to offer more assistance to the seamers’: Shan Masood

After the defeat, Pakistan captain Shan Masood said that his team anticipated more assistance for the seamers from the pitch and they thought that the match might not even last for five days.

“We had anticipated the pitch to offer more assistance to the seamers. Looking at the pitch, we expected it to do more. If we played 3 fast bowlers, we would be pushing them to the limit and the spinner would be bowling 25-30 overs a day, which we wanted to avoid. We thought that with the weather, it may not even last the full 5 days. At the end of the day, we got it wrong” Masood said in the press conference.

He also talked about his decision to declare the innings and said that they wanted to go for the win and felt that they scored enough runs.

“We wanted to go for a win in the match and thus felt we had enough runs on the board to declare. But the Bangladesh batters showed a lot of discipline and intent in their first innings. Mushfiq and Miraz batted really well” he added.
