West Indies batter becomes sixer king of CPL 2024 with brutal hitting display

New Delhi: The 35-year-old West Indian batter smashed eight sixes in the Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL 2024) match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Kings on September 24. Johnson Charles who is known for his explosive hitting smacked sixes all around the ground and also stitched a record partnership with Faf du Plessis for St. Lucia Kings.

Saint Lucia Kings batted first

After winning the toss, Trinbago Knight Riders’ skipper Kieron Pollard opted to bowl first but his decision quickly backfired as the opening pair of du Plessis and Charles stitched a 145-run partnership for the first wicket, breaking the previous record of 139-run partnership for the franchise. Pollard provided Knight Riders with their first breakthrough to end the sensational partnership.

Charles smashed most sixes in CPL 2024

The West Indian batter smashed eight maximums and seven boundaries in his knock. He scored 89 runs off 40 balls with an astonishing strike rate of 222.50. He also became the leading six-hitter of the tournament, smashing 25 sixes. He surpassed Quinton de Kock’s 24-sixes record in the tournament.

Trinbago Knight Riders lost the match by 80 runs

Saint Lucia Kings scored 218 runs in the 20 overs while batting first. Johnson Charles scored 89 runs while du Plessis also notched up 59 runs off 43 balls with the help of three maximums and four boundaries. Tim Seifert also played a crucial cameo and scored 30 runs off 17 balls, hitting three boundaries and one maximum in death overs.

Chasing the target of 219 runs, Knight Riders got off to a poor start and lost the wicket of Keacy Carty on 12 runs. Roston Chase dismissed Nicholas Pooran cheaply to put more pressure on Pollard and Co. Jason Roy batted brilliantly and scored 41 runs off 29 balls but other batters failed to contribute in the run chase and lost the match by a big margin. Both teams have already qualified for the playoffs.
