What did the Premier League table look like on 1st January 2024 vs. 2025?

New Delhi: An amazing year of 2024 is finally coming to an end. A year that produced top-notch drama in the Premier League that saw Manchester City being crowned the champions of England yet again, after a thrilling title race where Arsenal heart were broken in the very final matchday of the season. Just two points separated City and Arsenal at the top, as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted their 10th league title, which was also their sixth in the past seven seasons.

Although Manchester City won the Premier League for a record-breaking fourth consecutive season in 2023–2024, they were not leading the league going into 2024 as it was Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who were leading the race, and this time it isn’t any different as they sit at the top with an eight point gap. The current leaders had 45 points. The Reds had a three-point lead over Aston Villa, who were placed second at the time, and a five-point lead over City, though Pep Guardiola’s side had played a game less.

In addition, Arsenal trailed leaders Liverpool by five points in fourth place, while rivals Tottenham trailed them by only one point in fifth. If we look at the current scenario, only two out of these sides are in top five this time around as Liverpool are being chased by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at second place, while the surprise package Nottingham are breathing down the Gunners’ necks with 37 points. The fourth spot is taken by a much improved Chelsea team while Newcastle complete the top five with 32 points.

West Ham United were in sixth place under David Moyes while Manchester United, Brighton, Newcastle and Chelsea completed the top 10. Currently, the champions Manchester City, who are having a bad run of form this season, sit sixth in the table while another underdogs Bournemouth sit seventh, followed by Fulham, Aston Villa and Brighton to complete the top half.

Wolves started the bottom half sitting 11th in the table, followed by Bournemouth at 12th, Fulham at 13th and Crystal Palace at 14th on Januray 1st. Then came this season’s high flyers, Nottingham who were 15th in the table at the starting of the year 2024. This season however, we have some big surprises in the league as Tottenham are sitting 11th in the table followed by 12th placed Brentford, 13th placed West Ham United and far away from their standards, 14th placed Manchester United.

The 15th spot is being held by Crystal Palace, who slowly getting their form back. The bottom three were the three teams that eventually got relegated – Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United – with Everton and Brentford just above the drop zone in 17th and 16th respectively. If we talk about this season, not much has changed for the Toffees as they yet again find themselves to be relegation threatened at 16th while Wolves also find themselves in a precarious situation at 17th.

The three newly promoted sides sit in the relegation zone with Southampton hitting rock bottom, as they seem like they are on their way to achieve an unwanted record of being the worst football team in Premier League history with just six points on the board, halfway through the season. Other newly promoted sides, Leicester and Ipswich complete the relegation zone, sitting 19th and 18th respectively.
