New Delhi: The Olynmpic rings are the symbolic representation on the Olympic flag. The Olympic flag was designed by French educator and historian Pierre de Coubertin in August 1913. The Olympic rings are five interlaced rings with equal dimensions with three on top while the remaining two are present at the bottom.
The Olympic rings are presented in five different colours from left to right – blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Blue, black and red are placed on top with yellow and green at the bottom with all five of them interlocked to each other.
The Olympic rings, who are also called as five-coloured rings, represent the five inhabited continents. These continents are Asia, Africa, America (includes both North America and South America), Europe and Oceania. It should be noted that no particular ring represents a particular continent. The five-coloured rings also expresses the activity of the Olympic movement.

Pierre de Coubertin’s full-colour is completed when all the five colours are presented on a white background, which symbolise Olympism’s universality. There is a monochrome version of the full-coloured Olympic rings, where the Olympic rings may appear in any of the six official colours of the Olympic flag. Pierre de Coubertin used the five rings in a letterhead in July 1913.
“These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the cause of olympism and ready to accept its fecund rivalries. What is more, the six colors thus combined reproduce those of all nations without exception,”- Pierre de Coubertin was quoted as saying by Olympics.com.
According to Rule 8 of the Olympic Charter, the Olympic symbol also represents the meeting of all athletes throughout the world.
“The Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games,” the Rule 8 reads of the Olympic Charter.
The Paris Olympics 2024 is scheduled from July 26 to August 11. This will be the 33rd edition of the Summer Games with over 10,500 athletes to participate in the French capital.
