What makes Kamada Ekadashi so auspicious? Date, rituals and benefits

Mumbai: Kamada Ekadashi, one of the most sacred observances in the Hindu calendar, holds immense religious and spiritual importance. Falling on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) of the Chaitra month, this vrat (fast) is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, as are all Ekadashis. It is believed that those who observe the Kamada Ekadashi fast with devotion, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, are blessed with good health, peace, prosperity and spiritual wellbeing.

This year, Kamada Ekadashi will be observed on 8 April 2025, according to the Hindu Panchang. The Ekadashi tithi will begin at 8:00 PM on 7 April and conclude at 9:12 PM on 8 April. Therefore, as per the rules of observing Ekadashi based on the sunrise (udaya tithi), the fast will be kept on 8 April.

Why is Kamada Ekadashi Celebrated?

According to the Padma Purana, observing the Kamada Ekadashi vrat absolves a person from the sin of Brahmahatya (the gravest sin of killing a Brahmin) and also from other sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. It is also said to free one from ghostly afflictions (pishachatva dosh) and grants the same merit as performing the grand Vajapeya Yajna. Devotees believe that observing this fast and listening to the Kamada Ekadashi Katha leads to success in all endeavours.

Spiritual Benefits of Kamada Ekadashi

  • It is believed to free devotees from sins, including those committed unknowingly.
  • The fast helps attain moksha (liberation), preventing one from taking birth in lower or demonic life forms.
  • It destroys negative energies and afflictions, including ghostly or spirit-related doshas.
  • Observing this fast is considered equivalent to performing the Vajapeya Yajna, a highly auspicious Vedic ritual.
  • It helps remove all kinds of obstacles and doshas (spiritual defects).
  • Kamada Ekadashi is said to bestow akshaya punya—eternal or indestructible virtue.
  • The fast is believed to bring peace, harmony, and lasting prosperity to the family.
  • It also supports smooth family life by eliminating domestic troubles and discord.

Devotees are also encouraged to perform charity (daan-dharma) on this day, as it is considered highly auspicious. Kamada Ekadashi serves as a divine opportunity to cleanse the soul, seek forgiveness for past misdeeds, and move towards a more spiritually fulfilling life.
