New Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is working hard on his comeback after a successful surgery. He was out of action for more than eight months due to an ankle injury but has started bowling in the nets.
Shami was India’s most in-form bowler in the ODI World Cup 2023 where he picked up 24 wickets in seven matches. He took a total of 55 wickets in ODI World Cups and is the third-best Asian bowler and fifth-best in history.
He was also benched for the first four matches in the 2019 ODI World Cup. After four matches, he got the chance to play and took 13 wickets in the next three matches. He was dropped for the semi-final match against New Zealand which India lost by 18 runs.
Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube show ‘Unplugged’, Shami said that he took 13 wickets in three matches and what more the team management expected from him.
“The one thing I keep wondering is every team needs players who can perform well. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What more do you expect from me? I neither have questions nor do I have answers” Shami said.
He also said that if the management gives him a chance, he can prove himself “I can only prove myself when I get the opportunity. You gave me a chance, and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. played four matches overall and picked 14 wickets. In 2023, I picked 24 wickets in seven matches” he added.
‘No plans to retire’: Mohammed Shami
The star fast bowler also talked about his retirement and said he has no plans to retire. He also said that fans will see him bowl with Bumrah in the 2026 T20 World Cup and 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I have no plans to retire from cricket at the moment. The moment I get bore and stop enjoying the game, I will take retirement. I am looking forward to returning to the field and I can still contribute across formats,” Shami said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast.
“You will see me bowl with Jasprit Bumrah in the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup. I am going nowhere” he added.
