When is World Cup-winning Team India squad returning home from Barbados?

New Delhi: After Team India clinched the historic T20 World Cup 2024 title for the second time in Barbados, a question that has occupied every Indian mind is that when will the World Cup-winning squad come back to India?

The Rohit Sharma-led side pulled off a remarkable victory in the summit clash on Saturday to win the elusive ICC title after a gap of 11 years, after they beat South Africa in a fun-filled final. While the return of the champions would have been normal, ideally in a day or so, but the hurricane hit-Barbados is not allowing the T20 WC champs to go back home.

The entire team along with their families and the entire staff if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are stranded in a city hotel from the past two days as Barbados has been hit by Hurricane Beryl.

When will the World Cup champs be back?

The Indian team long with their families and BCCI officials is expected to fly back home on the evening of July 2, Tuesday in a charter flight arranged by the Indian cricket board. This was confirmed after Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley earlier in the day said that she expects the airport to be functional in the next 6 to 12 hours ending the shutdown caused by the hurricane.

“I don’t want to speak in advance of it, but I’ve literally been in touch with the airport personnel and they’re doing their last checks now and we want to resume to normal operations as a matter of urgency,” Ms. Mottley, who has been overseeing relief operations on the ground, told PTI.

“There are a number of people who were due to leave yet last night late or today or tomorrow morning. And we want to make sure that we can facilitate those persons, so I would anticipate that within the next six to 12 hours that the airport will be open,” she added.

Earlier on Monday, life-threatening winds and storm lashed Barbados and the nearby islands putting the entire country under complete lockdown since Sunday evening, almost a day after the culmination of the mega T20 World Cup 2024 final game.
