‘When to retire is up to…’: Ex-India star’s message to selectors over Kohli, Rohit

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has sent a strong message to the Ajit Agarkar-led senior Indian selection panel over the future of India’s stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Test cricket. Manjrekar said that retirement is a personal decision and it is up to the players when they want to quit, but he reminded the selection committee that they can decide how long the players can be part of the team.

Manjrekar’s comments came after Australia thrashed India by six wickets in the 5th and final Test in Sydney on Sunday to clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. While he refrained from naming any player in his tweet, it was quite evident that Manjrekar’s post was aimed at India’s senior players Kohli and Rohit, who failed to step up for the team in the Test series against Australia.

Both Kohli and Rohit endured horror outings in the five-match Test series as they failed to make an impact with the bat. While Kohli managed 190 runs in five matches at an abysmal average of 23.75, Rohit had an even worse campaign with only 31 runs from three Tests at an average of 6.2. Their poor show in the series has led to strong calls for the duo’s retirement from the longest format.

Manjrekar took to Twitter on Sunday to send a reminder to the Agarkar-led selection panel that they have the final say on whether India need to persist with Kohli and Rohit in Test cricket going forward. “When to retire, is up to the player but how long to play, is up to the selectors,” Manjrekar wrote in a tweet.

When to retire, is upto the player but how long to play, is upto the selectors.
