New Delhi: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will be looking to add to India’s medal tally at the Paris Olympics 2024. India have so far managed only three medals at the Games and all three of them have come from shooting with Manu Bhaker leading the charge. Manu contributed two bronze medals to India’s tally, becoming the first woman from the country to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics.
It was Manu who opened India’s account at the Paris Games with a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol final before combining with Sarabjot Singh to win another bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air rifle event. Shooter Swapnil Kusale won India’s third medal at the Games after bagging a bronze medal in men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.
India are currently ranked 47th in the Paris Olympics medals table with 3 bronze medals in shooting but the Indian athletes are not done yet at the Games. Several Indians will be competing in different sporting disciplines at the Paris Games in the upcoming days. Weightlifter Chanu will be one of them and will be looking to replicate her heroics from the last edition in Tokyo were she won a silver medal.
Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and was the first Indian to win a medal at the showpiece event. She became only the second from the country to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari, who won a bronze medal in weightlifting in the 2000 Sydney Games.
When will Mirabai Chanu start her campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024?
Chanu is set to compete in the women’s 49kg weightlifting at the Paris Olympics 2024 and will be aiming to become only the 4th Indian after the likes of Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu and Manu Bhaker to win two medals for the country at the Olympics post-independence. She will also be hoping to better her medal colour in Paris and aim for gold this year.
Chanu will begin her campaign in the women’s 49kg category on Wednesday, August 07. The final of the women’s weightlifting 49kg category is scheduled to begin at 11 PM IST. Apart from Chanu, the likes of Neeraj Chopra, Vinesh Phogat and Lakshya Sen among others are also among India’s strongest medal contenders in the remainder of the Paris Olympics 2024.
