Jerusalem: The Israeli military on Monday said that it is widening an aerial offensive against what it says are Hezbollah weapons sites in southern and eastern Lebanon. The military said that it was expanding its airstrikes to include areas of the Beqaa Valley, along Lebanon’s eastern border, after targeting more than 300 sites in southern Lebanon. Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm Daniel Hagari said residents of the Beqaa Valley must immediately evacuate areas where Hezbollah is storing weapons.
Israel has been ramping up attacks against Hezbollah in the last of couple of weeks including surprise pager, walkie-talkies blasts and air strikes targeting Lebanon’s logistics.
Israel has also claimed that it has eliminated several Hezbollah commanders in various strikes it conducted in the last few days. Let’s take a look at top Hezbollah commanders which Israel claims to have eliminated.
Top Hezbollah commanders eliminated so far
Ibrahim Akil
Ibrahim Akil, 61, was the second top commander of Hezbollah to be killed in an Israeli airstrike in the southern suburb of Beirut in as many months, dealing a severe blow to the group’s command structure. He was killed on Friday when the group was still reeling from a widely suspected Israeli attack targeting Hezbollah communications earlier this week when thousands of pagers exploded simultaneously. Ibrahim Akil, a top Hezbollah military official, was on US top wanted list. Israel claims to have eliminated several other operatives of the Hezbollah belonging to the operations staff and Radwan Unit commanders.
Fuad Shukr
On July 30, Israel conducted an air strike and eliminated Hezbollah’s top commander Fuad Shukr in the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital. According to Israeli military, Shukr was the right-hand man of Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
Mohammed Nasser
On July 3, Israel claimed that it eliminated another Hezbollah commander Mohammed Nasser. Israel claimed responsibility, saying he headed a unit responsible for firing from southwestern Lebanon at Israel
Taleb Abdallah
Earlier on June 12, Israel had claimed that senior Hezbollah field commander Abdallah was killed in its strike after targeting a command and control centre in southern Lebanon.
