New Delhi: India’s D Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion in history after beating China’s Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship on Thursday, December 12. He became only the second Indian after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to win the coveted title.
After both teams reached the 14th round with 6.5 points apiece, the Chinese made a costly error which led Gukesh to an amazing victory on the 58th move. The 18-year-old also became the youngest chess champion, surpassing legendary Russian Gary Kasparov.

Who is D Gukesh?
Gukesh was born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth is an surgeon and his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist. He started his chess journey at the age of seven, and his rise has been astronomical ever since. He was introduced to chess by his school and within six months of teaching the game his coach saw a lot of potential and helped him become a FIDE-rated player. He achieved a lot of success on the international scene under Vijayanand’s coaching.
He saw his first major success in the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championship where he won five medals. He also won the under-12 title with a score of 10/11 at the World Youth Championship in the same year. At just the age of 11, he achieved the status of international master.
His first big achievement was becoming a Grandmaster in January 2019 at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. He missed GM Sergey Karjakin’s record by just 17 days. At the age of 18, Gukesh is the youngest world chess champion and third youngest Grandmaster. He is also the third youngest player to reach a chess rating of 2700 and the youngest player to reach a rating of 2750. Gukesh is also the youngest player to win the Candidates Tournament.
