New Delhi: Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the acting secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Jay Shah took over as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah had to step down from the post of BCCI secretary after he took over as the new ICC chairman earlier this week.
BCCI president Roger Binny used his constitutional powers to appoint Saikia as the acting secretary of BCCI, replacing Shah. Saikia’s appointment is a stop-gap solution for the BCCI till a formal election is held to appoint the permanent secretary of the Indian cricket board. Saikia was serving as BCCI’s joint secretary and will now replace Shah as the acting secretary of the board.
In his letter to Saikia, BCCI president Binny cited clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution to delegate the functions of the board secretary to the Assam official, who is also the Advocate General of the state. Binny said he believes Saikia will perform his duties to the best of his abilities as the acting secretary of the board.

Devajit Saikia is an Indian advocate, a cricket administrator and a former first-class cricketer, who hails from Assam. Saikia was born and raised in Guwahati and completed his graduation from Cotton College, Guwahati University. He served as the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association before being appointed as BCCI’s joint secretary in October 2022.
Saikia represented Assam in first-class cricket. He played 4 matches for Assam and scored 54 runs in first-class cricket and also played numerous tournaments around the world. He stepped into sports administration before taking up cricket administration after his retirement from cricket. Saikia was recently appointed as the Board Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC), representing BCCI. He took charge of the position at ICC’s headquarters in Dubai recently.
