New Delhi: India’s para-archer Harvinder Singh was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award on Saturday on the eve of the 76th Republic Day of the country. Harvinder scripted history at the Paris Paralympics last year, becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in para-archery. He was conferred with the Padma Shri, India’s 4th highest civilian honour to join an exclusive list of athletes to have earned the award.
Harvinder defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the final to win the elusive gold medal for India in the men’s individual recurve. It was 2nd Paralympics medal for the 33-year-old from Haryana, who also won a bronze medal at the last edition of the Games in Tokyo. Harvinder played his part in helping India finish with a record-breaking 29 medals at the Paris Paralympics, including seven gold and 9 silver medals.
The para-archer was honoured with the Padma Shri on Saturday on the eve of Republic Day 2025 for his heroics at the Paralympics. The Padma Shri is India’s 4th highest civilian honour behind Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna.
The Padma awards are awarded in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri and are rewarded to recognise exceptional contributions by individuals across various fields like art, social work, public affairs, sports, science, literature, trade and more.
