New Delhi: Manu Bhaker scripted history at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday after becoming the first woman to win two medals for India in the same edition of the Games. Manu and Sarabjot Singh won a bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event to add a second medal to India’s tally. The pair clinched India’s first team medal in shooting at the Olympics.
Bhaker and Sarabjot, who finished third in the qualifying round, defeated the South Korean pair of Wonho Lee and Jin Ye Oh 16-10 in the bronze medal match. While it was Sarabjot’s maiden Olympic medal, Manu clinched her second medal at the Paris Olympics having already won a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event last week.
Manu ended India’s 12-year-long drought in shooting at the Olympics after winning a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol final on Sunday. It was India’s first medal in shooting since 2012 when Gagan Narang won a bronze medal at the London Olympics. Manu also became the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal.
With her second bronze medal on Tuesday, the talented 22-year-old shooter from Jhajjar, Haryana, rewrote history by becoming the first Indian to win two Olympic medals in a single edition in the post-independence era. But who was the first one to do it for India?
Norman Pritchard – 1st athlete to win two medals for India in a single Olympics
Norman Pritchard was the first athlete to win two medals for India in a single edition of the Olympics. Pritchard won two silver medals in 200m sprint and 200m hurdles at the 1904 Games in Paris. The British-Indian athlete was born in Kolkata and was the first to represent India at the Olympics. He won India’s first-ever medal at the showpiece event.
Pritchard was the sole representative for India at the Paris Olympics in 1900. While he won two medals in a single edition before India’s independence, Manu became the first Indian to achieve the feat post-independence.
Manu has a chance to become India’s most successful Olympian of all time as she will get a shot at winning another medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old will represent India in the women’s 25m air pistol event which gets underway on August 02. If Manu manages to bag a medal in the event, she will become the first Indian athlete to win three Olympic medals and the first to do it in a single edition.
