New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has said that it cannot ensure the safety of senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan amid his involvement in a FIR related to a murder case in Dhaka. Shakib, who was part of Awami League political party, was named in an FIR for a muder of a garment worker Mohammed Rubel during a student’s protest in Dhaka.
Although Shakib wasn’t present in the country at the time of the horrific incident, the 37-year-old was booked at the Adabdor police station in Dhaka. Ever since then there has been demand for Shakib’s omission from Bangladesh’s national team, though the BCB has continued to play him on the tours of Pakistan and India.
On Thursday, Shakib announced retirement from T20 Internationals and expressed his decision to play final Test match against South Africa in Dhaka at home next month if his safety isn’t a concern. Shakib said that if he won’t be able to participate in the South Africa Tests then the ongoing second Test against India will be his last appearance in red-ball cricket at the international stage.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed made it clear that the national board cannot take the guarantee of the player’s personal security.
“Shakib’s security is not in the board’s hand. The board can’t provide an individual with personal security. He has to take a decision on that. His security has to come from the highest level of the government,” Bangladeshi news outlets quoted Faruque as saying, as reported by news agency PTI.
“BCB is not a security agency like the police or RAB (Rapid Action Battalion). We haven’t spoken to anyone (in the government) about him. Since his case is a sub-judice matter, so we can’t really do much about it,” he added.
Shakib is Bangladesh’s most wicket-taker in international cricket
Shakib Al Hasan has picked more than 700 wickets for Bangladesh across formats. The left-arm orthodox spinner has claimed 708 wickets in 446 matches. With 14,721 runs in 489 innings, Shakib is Bangladesh’s third most run-getter after Tamim Iqbal (15,192) Mushfiqur Rahim (15,206).
