Why IPL 2025 might not resume on May 17?

New Delhi: After being deprived of slam-bang action for a week, the wait for cricket fans across the globe is finally over. The Indian Premier League (2025) was suspended on May 9 amidst an intense military conflict between India and Pakistan, but after both countries reached an understanding on May 10 to end the cross-order conflict, which included drone and missile strikes, a revised schedule was announced on May 12, with the remainder of the tournament scheduled to resume on May 17 and set to be held across six venues.

IPL 2025 resumes after conflict: Revised schedule & playoff race

The cash-rich tournament will resume with a cracking match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. There will be plenty at stake once the tournament restarts for the last 17 matches, as no team has yet to qualify for the play-offs.

While three teams  – Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – have been knocked out of the play-offs race, seven teams are fighting for the top four spots.

Virat Kohli’s RCB, placed at second spot with eight wins out of 11 games and among the hot favourites to qualify for the play-offs, will be in action against KKR, placed sixth, and hoping for a strong finish, on Saturday in Bengaluru, which has witnessed persistent rainfall for the last few days, sparking serious concerns over highly-anticipated fixture on Saturday.

While Chinnaswamy Stadium has one of the best drainage systems in India, heavy and incessant downpours might delay the much-awaited return of IPL 2025 action.

Torrential rain has hit Bengaluru through mid-May, and May 15 saw the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium waterlogged. RCB all-rounder Tim David was seen enjoying the rain on the flooded field a day before the match. Practice sessions were cancelled on Friday due to persistent rain, and the forecast is not good for Saturday either.

According to AccuWeather, there is a strong possibility of rain in Bengaluru on May 17. There is a big chance of heavy thunderstorms during both the afternoon and evening, triggering further concerns about the possibility of play.

What happens if RCB vs KKR match is washed out?

If the match between RCB and KKR is abandoned due to rain and points are split, RCB will move to 17 points from 12 matches, remaining in pole position to qualify for the play-offs. Meanwhile, KKR, currently on 11 points from 12 matches, would be eliminated from the playoff race.

The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), which resumes with the RCB vs KKR clash on Saturday after a week-long suspension due to the India-Pakistan conflict, might not resume on May 17.
