New Delhi: When WWE superstar CM Punk returned at the Survivor Series 2023 in Chicago, he sent shockwaves across the professional wrestling world. Such was the madness and craze of his comeback which left the fans electrified as they assumed that now he is going to stick with the company for a longer period. As it has turned out to be, that was his intention, and the reason behind him renegotiating his WWE contract has come to light.
Punk’s return to WWE was a grand affair and it has changed things in the wrestling (WWE) circuit quite a lot. Ever since he returned, he has become an integral part of the WWE and is making headlines due to his involvement in major stories. He is notably also building excitement about where the company is headed in the future. However, he was out of the ring for longer due to sustaining a triceps injury at the Royal Rumble earlier this year and hasn’t competed in a battle since then.
Stating the possible reason for Punk’s decision to renew his WWE contract, Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer said that Punk had initially signed a short-term agreement, which is currently up for renewal. The contract also comprised rollover provisions that extend its duration, but the renegotiation phase was expected to happen around this time.
Meltzer further explained that both sides are in no urgency as both WWE and Punk were aware that renegotiation was on the cards and it would happen now. He described the process as smooth, with no hassles reported between the parties. Both are focusing on the terms to ensure they are aligned with their goals moving forward.
“What happened when CM Punk came in, they had a short-term deal which is expiring now. Now there are rollovers in the deal so there’s not like a hurry that they have to sign him because the deal goes longer. But they knew all along that right around now would be when they would be renegotiating any deals…It was kind of known that that was going to happen now,” Meltzer said.
Another report weighs in…
A PW Insider report also cleared the air on fans guessing if Punk is trying to leverage his star power – a possible reason for his contract renewal. The report said that Punk and WWE were in talks for a new deal, but that WWE was the one who approached Punk. It also confirmed that Punk signed a three-year deal with WWE that began on the day he returned at Survivor Series 2023. It is to be noted that this won’t include any time he’s been off due to the torn triceps injury.
On July 22, during the Monday night RAW, Punk revealed that he had been medically cleared to compete which has now paved the way for his highly-anticipated match against Drew McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam. With Punk set to stick around for a long time now, it will be interesting to watch out how he will fare in his second match since the comeback.
Speculations ran rife over CM Punk and his WWE contract in the last few days with fans guessing why is the veteran renewing his term with the company and if he is trying to leverage his star power. WWE Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
