Mumbai: In Sanatan Dharma, Vat Savitri Vrat is regarded as a deeply significant observance for married Hindu women. Celebrated with devotion and tradition, this vrat (fast) is performed annually on the day following the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi (14th day of the waning moon) in the month of Jyeshtha. Coincidentally, this day also marks Shani Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Shani. On this day, women worship the sacred Vat (banyan) tree, praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands. It is believed that those who observe this vrat are blessed with unbroken marital bliss (Akhand Saubhagya) and, in many cases, even with the boon of children if they are longing for one.

Interestingly, there are two Vat Savitri Vrat observances in the year 2025 — both falling in the same month of Jyeshtha. This often raises questions: why is the same vrat performed twice in a month, and what is the reason behind this dual tradition?

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 Dates

The first Vat Savitri Vrat in 2025 will be observed on 26 May, which falls on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya (new moon). This version of the vrat is primarily observed in North India. The second Vat Savitri Vrat will take place on 10 June, coinciding with Jyeshtha Purnima (full moon). This is followed more commonly in regions like Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Why Is Vat Savitri Vrat Celebrated Twice?

According to texts like the Skanda Purana and Bhavishya Purana, the vrat is meant to be observed on Jyeshtha Shukla Purnima (full moon). However, scriptures such as Nirnaya Amrit and other regional almanacs suggest that it should be performed on Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya (new moon). The difference arises due to two traditional lunar calendars followed in India: Purnimanta and Amanta.

In the Purnimanta calendar (prevalent in North India, Nepal, and Mithila), a lunar month ends on the full moon day. Hence, Vat Savitri is observed on Amavasya, called Vat Savitri Amavasya.

In the Amanta calendar (followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and southern states), the month concludes on the new moon. Therefore, Vat Savitri is celebrated on the Purnima day, referred to as Vat Purnima.

Both traditions honour the legendary tale of Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from the clutches of death, and thus, both days are equally auspicious for worship. Women across the country follow either version based on regional customs and family traditions, reaffirming their faith and devotion through this sacred fast.
