‘Will coach my son if he wants to play’: Novak Djokovic reflects on life after tennis – WATCH

New Delhi: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz looked steamy hot in the Wimbledon 2024 final as he defeated his senior stalwart Novak Djokovic for the second consecutive time to lift his second Wimbledon trophy. Becoming the only player in the world to have done so against the Serb, Alcaraz has added more glory to his tally by bagging a fourth Grand Slam title and successfully clinching all four finals that he has featured in.

Post-match, it was an emotional affair for Djokovic, who in his speech, reflected on his campaign at the SW19 and made a special mention to his family. With the runner-up trophy in his hand, the Serbian got a bit emotional and looking at his son, said that he would coach him if he wanted to pursue tennis.

“To my wife I love you. To my wonderful children thank you for bringing a smile to my face every single day. I’m so thankful to be the father of two little angels who love tennis. I don’t know if I have the nerves to have a coaching career with my son, but if you really wish to pursue it I’ll be there for you,” Djokovic said.

“He was definitely very hot today. Obviously not the result I wanted, especially in the first couple of sets. I wasn’t up to par but credit to Carlos. I tried to push him and save the three match points to extend the match a little bit longer. But he was the deserved winner today,” the runner-up reflected on the match.

When asked about him making it to the final just 37 days after his knee surgery, he said, “I have to be very proud. Obviously, there’s disappointment right now but when I reflect on the last four to five weeks, and what I’ve been through (the knee surgery), I’m very satisfied. I try to remind myself sometimes of how surreal it is being here; being really blessed to fight for the trophy. Every time I step on the court it feels like the first time. I’m a child living a childhood dream.

“Enough talking. I just want to say thanks to my whole team, for sticking with me through good and bad times. I love you guys, thanks for being in my corner, let’s keep this going,” he concluded.

How did the final go?

Showcasing nerves of steel against the world no. 2, Alcaraz dominated the final clash throughout and hardly spared any opportunity for the 24-time Grand Slam winner, who looked to struggling with his right knee for which he had undergone surgery a few weeks back. His movements were hampered as Alcaraz held a psychological edge over Djokovic and handed him a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) straight-set defeat.

The match saw very little of Djokovic’s traditional excellence as he looked a bit off on the court and could make very few impressive returns. He did force a few games into the tiebreak but the 21-year-old Spaniard turned out to be the ultimate winner with shots that probably no great player has answers to. As Djokovic hit the net during the tiebreaker, Alcaraz was super pumped as he waved to the crowd and addressed their cheers followed by a warm hug to his opponent.
