With eye on Champions Trophy spot, Hardik Pandya to make 50-over return after an year

New Delhi: With the Champions trophy impasse finally over, the preparatory plans of all eight participating nations and the players are set in motion. The mega-tournament will make a comeback to the international calendar after seven years when the action kicks off on February 19 in Karachi, Pakistan. The return of the Champions Trophy could also mark the 50-over comeback of Hardik Pandya, who has been out of ODI action for over a year.

With a potential return on the cards, Hardik is set to feature in 50-over cricket for the first time since the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, with a more than likely appearance for his state side Baroda. Hardik, who missed the initial rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is set to play against Bengal in the fourth round on December 28.

Hardik eyes 50-over comeback in India colours

Hardik’s last appearance in a 50-over format was in an ODI World Cup league match against Bangladesh in Pune last year. Hardik suffered an ankle injury during the match and was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

Hardik has since recovered from the injury and features in domestic and international T20 cricket but, despite his keenness, has not appeared in the 50-over format.

Hardik’s last international appearance came in the away series in South Africa in November. After that, Pandya played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament for Baroda.

Can Pandya continue SMAT momentum in Vijay Hazare?

He was in good form in SMAT and amassed 246 runs in 7 matches at a stunning average of 49.20 and an astounding Strike Rate of 193.70 including two half-centuries.

With the ball, Pandya claimed six wickets including best figures of 3 for 27.

Pandya showcased some of his best cricket in SMAT and if he continues in the same vain of form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he could be in the running for the fast-bowling all-rounder’s spot alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy in the Champions Trophy squad.
