World Bamboo Day 2024: Why is Bamboo important for our environment?

New Delhi: Every year on September 18, World Bamboo Day is observed to increase awareness about the plant which plays many important roles in our lives. For centuries, bamboo has been a part of our lives and it is time for us to use it in an eco-friendly way. Every year, the day is celebrated to make people more aware of the potential of bamboo.

In India, September marks the onset of the festive seasons and bamboos are used to make the pandals. Bamboo can be beneficial for our environment as well, especially at a time when climate change and global warming are threatening the very existence of this planet. In this article, we will look at how bamboo can be useful for the environment.

Why is bamboo good for our environment?

Balancing oxygen and carbon dioxide

Bamboo plays an important role in balancing oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a bamboo grove releases 35 per cent more oxygen than the same number of trees. Hence, planting bamboo enables us to reduce our carbon footprint and helps to fight global warming.

An alternative to fossil fuels

Bamboo can reduce the usage of fossil fuels as it offers an alternative, highly renewable biomass energy source. It can go on to provide a sustainable source of bioenergy for those dependent on fossil fuels for several daily chores. According to reports, bamboo can be converted into gas or pellets which can, in turn, produce heating and electricity.

Reduces deforestations

Since bamboo grows quickly, it takes the pressure off other forest resources which leads to a reduction in deforestation. The calorific value of bamboo charcoal and gas is similar to commonly used forms of bioenergy and in places like the European Union, the conversion of bamboo into pellets leads to the production of electricity and heating. Also, bamboo can be grown on marginal land, reducing the need to encroach on agriculturally productive lands.

Adaptation and restoration

Bamboos grow at a rapid pace, allowing us of its frequent harvesting. The rapid growth enables farmers to flexibly adapt their harvesting practices to the changing growing conditions due to climate change. Bamboo provides a year-round source of income and is also useful for restoring degraded lands as it thrives on problem soils and steep slopes unsuitable for other crops.
