New Delhi: World Lion Day is observed to raise awareness about the conservation of lions. It also aims to highlight their importance in the ecosystem and the urgent need to protect them from various threats. The day reminds us that lions are important in maintaining ecological balance and promoting conservation initiatives. On this occasion, let us inform you about where one can find lions around the world.
Where can you find Lions?
Lions once roamed vast regions of Europe, Africa, and Asia. However, today, they have vanished from 94 per cent of their original territory and are primarily found in Sub-Saharan Africa and India. Asiatic lions used to live in many places, including northern Africa’s forests, northern Greece, the Middle East, southwest Asia, and India. However, their numbers decreased due to hunting and weapons. In the 19th century, lions were only found in Gir Forest National Park.

African Lions
The lion populations in West and Central Africa have experienced severe declines, with almost all populations at risk of declining by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. Bushmeat hunting and open reserves are contributing factors. East Africa has one of the largest lion populations in the continent, but experts speculate a 37 per cent chance of significant decline due to inadequate protection and human population increases. In Southern Africa, lion populations have increased in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, partly due to well-managed conservation areas with fences. However, habitat loss and lack of space are still concerns.
