New Delhi: Every year on September 22, World Rose Day is observed worldwide. It is also known as the Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients. The day, as you can guess, is dedicated to cancer patients who are fighting against the deadly illness. The day provides them with hope and courage and entrusts us with the responsibility to bring hope and cheer to all cancer patients. The day provides us with an opportunity to provide support to cancer patients and their families and to remind them that they are not alone in this fight.

How did the World Rose Day originate?

The celebration of World Rose Day began with the tale of the determination of a girl named Melinda Rose in Canada. She was just 12 years old when she was diagnosed with Askin’s Tumor, a rare form of blood cancer in 1994. The doctors gave her a few weeks to survive but she defied all odds and lived for six months.

Melinda, during her fight against cancer, wrote poems and letters to encourage other cancer patients to give them hope and happiness. World Rose Day was established in her honour to encourage cancer patients to not give up and continue the battle for survival.

What is the significance of World Rose Day?

Rose the flower is the representation of love, care and compassion. People give cancer patients roses to show their support and to encourage them as roses also signify hope and positivity. The day helps us to raise awareness about different types of cancer and the need to diagnose and treat them.
