World Suicide Prevention Day: 5 common warning signs to watch out in your loved ones

New Delhi: Suicide is a leading public health burden across the globe including in India. According to statistics, in 2022, around 1.7 lakh suicide cases were recorded while, in 2021, a 4.2 per cent rise was noticed in the cases. Further, a jump of 27 per cent was seen in 2018. In total, the rate of suicide per one lakh population has raised to 12.4 in 2022 which is the highest year for this number.

On the other hand, there are states like Bihar that saw the lowest rate of suicides. According to the ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022’ report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Bihar has a 0.6 per 1, per cent 1,00,000 population making the state stand at 36th among the 28 states and eight union territories.

Not everyone shows similar signs of committing suicide, but there are some behavioural changes in a person by which one can make out if they want to commit suicide or they may have thoughts that are suicidal. This can be a significant cause of concern, here are 5 common warning indicators of suicidal behaviour:

Talks about dying: According to a report from the National Mental Health Association, if you notice your loved one who talks about dying by suicide then be aware and keep a check on the concerned person.

Changes in eating or sleeping pattern: An individual who has suicidal thoughts may show dramatic changes in their sleeping or eating habits. They may skip their meals and may not be able to sleep properly.

Withdrawal from friends and family: The person is at risk if he or she shows signs of withdrawing from their friends and family. They may start avoiding meeting their friends and some family members completely.

Loss of interest: If you notice that your loved one has lost interest in his or her work or hobbies and is suffering from a mental health condition then they might be at risk.

Has tried to commit suicide before: If a person has already tried to commit suicide earlier then you must keep an extra check or eye on those people because there is a high chance that they do something similar to that.
