New Delhi: Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari from Saudi Arabia, also known as the heaviest man alive, once weighed 610 kilograms. However, with the help of former Saudi king Abdullah, he went through a drastic transformation and lost a whopping 542 kilograms; now he weighs 63.5 kilos. This started 11 years ago in 2023 when Shaari had been bedridden for over three years and weighed a massive 610 kilos. Not only was he the heaviest person alive but also the second-heaviest person to have ever lived. Back then, he caught the attention of King Abdullah who then helped Shaari come up with a plan, a costly one at that, which proved lifesaving.
Khalid’s weight loss journey
Khalid was first brought to his hometown King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh and was then placed on a specially-designed bed. He was tended to by a team of 30 doctors who also assembled the bed, and created a treatment regimen involving both surgery and therapeutic approaches. Khalid’s case required both gastric bypass surgery and an exercise plan to meet the said requirements and also a customised diet. Within only six months, he lost almost half of his weight.
The first part of the transformation was quick citing the extensive care that Khalid was given at the hospital including intensive physiotherapy which helped him regain mobility. Additionally, multiple surgeries were performed to remove excess skin.
What is a gastric bypass surgery?
Gastric bypass surgery, bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a procedure wherein the stomach is divided into pouches, an upper pouch, and a larger lower pouch which is remnant. The small intestine is then rearranged to connect both. A metabolic and weight loss procedure, it reprograms the digestive system enabling one to consume and absorb fewer calories. Like other operators, it is advised for clinically and severely obese people to counter chronic and acute health problems such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, acid reflux, and hypertension. This procedure restricts the amount of food that the stomach can hold thereby supporting weight loss.
