New Delhi: Mumbai Indians (MI) hammered Gujarat Giants (GG) by five wickets to bag their first win in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 on Tuesday, February 18. Mumbai Indians rode on an impressive bowling effort from the bowlers and a dominant show from the batters to register an emphatic victory to secure their first points of the season.
The bowlers got Mumbai Indians off to a flyer after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bowl first in the match at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Nat Sciver-Brunt drew the first blood for MI by dismissing GG opener Beth Mooney cheaply on 1 before South African pacer Shabnim Ismail got rid of Laura Wolvaardt on 4 off 7 balls.
Haley Matthews and Amelia Kerr then combined to run through the Gujarat Giants batting line-up with five wickets between them. While Matthews dismissed Dayalan Hemalatha, Kashvee Gautam and Simran Shaikh, Kerr got rid of the hard-hitting Deandra Dottin and Tanuja Kanwar to skittle out Gujarat Giants for a paltry 120 runs.
Harleen Deol top-scored for Gujarat Giants with a gritty 32 off 31 balls. She combined with Gautam (20) to add 24 runs for the sixth wicket to propel her team to a decent total. However, it didn’t prove enough in the end as Mumbai Indians chased it down comfortably to register a 5-wicket win and bag their first victory of the season.
