New Delhi: Yash Dayal’s name in Indian cricket is carving its own path as the left-arm pacer recently got his maiden India call-up for the home Test series against Bangladesh. Now that people have started noticing him for his calibre, things weren’t so nice when he broke out in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was a crucial asset for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2024, helping them to qualify for the playoffs in a thrilling encounter.
But for Dayal, the qualiifcation came at a cost. In the virtual knockout clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dayal picked the prized wicket of MS Dhoni, who is probably a wicket on every budding bowler’s bucket list. Although the team had a dismal outing in the season, Dayal ticked all the boxes for RCB. He was heavily trolled when he was first signed by RCB but the pacer turned the tides for the team which lost seven out of their first eight games.
In the nail-biting clash against CSK, RCB needed to win by at least 18 runs to make qualify for the playoffs. As the game progressed to the final over, CSK needed 17 runs to make it to the top four and that is when Faf du Plessis handed the ball to Dayal. With MSD on strike, Dayal bowled the first ball which was sent out of the park, putting the rookie pacer under extreme pressure.
Why Dayal regrets dismissing Dhoni?
On the very next ball, Dayal got rid of Dhoni to take the game away from CSK. However, the 26-year-old pacer recently revealed that the wicket of Dhoni remains a bitter-sweet moment. Dayal feared it could be the last time Dhoni played in the IPL which is why he felt bad aster dismissing him. He revealed this on Jatin Sapru’s YouTube channel.
“I felt bad after dismissing him. Because I don’t know or care what people say but the frustration with which he left the ground, it was like you don’t know whether he will return or not. Will we ever see him again on the ground. It was a moment where a lot of things were going through my head. I got a breather, a bit of relief,” Dayal said.
“With 11 runs needed off 4, I was like why I am even looking at the scoreboard. I shouldn’t. I should just focus on my bowling. Shardul (Thakur) bhai was on strike. Virat (Kohli) bhai said, ‘don’t give pace, nor bowl right onto his bat’. I told him right now it’s like peanut butter falling from top. Anywhere I want to bowl, I will I have so much confidence,” he added.
Dayal’s recent performances in the domestic circuit landed him a maiden Test call-up the two-match Test series against Bangladesh and it remains to be seen if will be given a game to test his potential.
