Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and 3 others: Kane Williamson reveals his picks for next Fab 4

New Delhi: With Virat Kohli quitting Tests and T20Is, Steve Smith retiring from ODIs, and Kane Williamson declining New Zealand’s central contract, the era of cricket’s original Fab 4 seem to be coming to an end. Joe Root, too, is not part of England’s T20 plans, but continues to go strong in Tests and ODIs. With the Fab 4 heading towards the end of their respective careers, the new generation is waiting to take over.

Williamson recently shared his views on who he feels can constitute the next Fab 4 in cricket, as he named five players who can be part of the elite group. The former New Zealand captain, who was part of the original Fab 4 alongside Kohli, Smith and Root, picked two rising Indian stars – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, alongside England’s Harry Brook, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Australia’s Cameron Green.

“The players that come to mind in terms of multi-format are: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook. And also Cam Green. Those are all outstanding players and have shown fantastic moments in all formats. All young and their games are just growing,” Williamson told ESPNCricinfo.

Gill was recently appointed as India’s new Test captain after the retirement of the senior duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the longest format. Gill has already established his credentials as one of the most consistent batters in the team and has done well across formats. Jaiswal, on the other hand, has witnessed a remarkable rise.

The dashing left-hander is arguably one of India’s best performers in Test cricket and has been churning out runs with incredible consistency. The left-hand opener has also done well in the limited opportunities that have come his way in white-ball cricket. He was India’s leading run-getter with 391 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia and is expected to play a crucial role in India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England.

Brook has been appointed as England’s captain in white-ball cricket after Jos Buttler stepped down and has done well for the team across formats. Green, who will be making his comeback for Australia in the WTC 2023-25 final against South Africa after a long injury layoff, is considered one of the best young all-rounders in the world at present.
