Why is Yashoda Jayanti Special for Women?
Yashoda Jayanti holds great significance for women, especially mothers. The fast observed on this day symbolizes a mother’s unconditional love and devotion toward her child. Women observe this fast and perform puja to pray for the long life, happiness, and prosperity of their children.
During the puja, a special ritual is performed where an idol or image of Bal Krishna (child form of Krishna) sitting in Mata Yashoda’s lap is worshipped. It is believed that observing the Yashoda Jayanti fast with dedication can fulfill the wish of those seeking motherhood.
The Legend of Yashoda Jayanti
As per Hindu mythology, Mata Yashoda undertook intense penance to seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before her and granted her a boon. Mata Yashoda expressed her wish to have Lord Vishnu as her son. Lord Vishnu assured her that in the future, he would take birth as the eighth child of Vasudeva and Devaki and be raised by her.
When Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva, the cruel king Kansa posed a threat to his life. To protect him, Vasudeva secretly carried baby Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokul and placed him under the care of Mata Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj. Mata Yashoda nurtured Lord Krishna with immense love, unaware of his divine identity at first. Her unwavering devotion and motherly love were so profound that even great deities like Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Lakshmi could not receive the same level of grace from Krishna as she did.
