New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has dropped a massive hint about his future in Tests and ODIs after announcing his retirement from T20Is. Rohit confirmed his retirement from the shortest format hours after leading India to a memorable triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024 last month. India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in a nail-biting final to lift the elusive trophy.
India brought an end to an 11-year-long ICC title drought with the historic triumph as Rohit became the oldest captain to win the T20 World Cup at the age of 37. Besides Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja too confirmed their retirement from T20Is as both senior players signed off on a high from the shortest format after helping India clinch glory.
Riding on the success of the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit has also been named India’s captain for the ICC Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship (WTC) final scheduled to be played next year. However, at 37, Rohit is at the fag end of his international career and is not getting younger. There are doubts about how long can he continue at the highest level given there are also concerns about his fitness.
Recently speaking at an event in Dallas, USA, Rohit was asked if he would continue to represent India till the next ODI World Cup in 2027. While he refused to give a firm answer, Rohit dropped a major hint on his ODI and Test future by stating that he will continue playing for a while.
“I don’t look that far ahead. So clearly you will see me playing for a while,” Rohit said, receiving loud cheers from the crowd after his response.

Rohit to be seen in action against Bangladesh next
Rohit is likely to be next seen in action for India when they host Bangladesh in a three-match Test series starting September 19. The Hitman is likely to be rested for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka which will get underway later this month. Despite having quit T20Is, Rohit will be in the thick of things as India have a hectic schedule with 10 Test matches lined up in the next 4 months.
India will play three Tests against Bangladesh followed by three Test matches against New Zealand at home followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The Indian team will then take on England in a home series in January 2025 before the Champions Trophy in February.
