New Delhi: Zika virus cases is on rise in Pune, even though the cases has been reported from some parts of the city, the virus may have spread to most of the parts of the city and many parole may have contracted the virus, according to expert from the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE).
Till Sunday, the city has reported around 11 cases, mostly from places like Mundhwa, Erandwane, Kothrud, and Ambedgaon area reported Hindustan Times.
It is said that the cases have been reported in patients have no travel history to Zika-virus affected regions or cohabitation and there is a local transmission of Zika in the city.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus is commonly thought to be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito from Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti which is mainly found in the tropical and subtropical areas. But apart from this, the virus can also be spread through sexual transmission.
There have been reports that has found Zika virus in semen, vaginal fluids, saliva, urine and breast milk. If this is the case, who are at risk and how to prevent the disease.
Dr Vigyan Mishra Chief of lab-Neuberg Diagnostics, Noida told News9, “Preventing Zika virus infection involves multiple strategies focused on avoiding mosquito bites and reducing mosquito populations, as well as taking precautions for sexual transmission. Check some key measures.”
Reduce Mosquito Habitats:
Eliminate standing water in and around your home where mosquitoes can breed, such as in buckets, flowerpots, and tyres.
Change water in vases, bird baths, and pet bowls regularly.
Use larvicides to treat containers of water that cannot be emptied.
Sexual Transmission Precautions:
Use condoms consistently and correctly to reduce the risk of sexual transmission of Zika virus.
Abstain from sex if you or your partner have travelled to an area with Zika or have been diagnosed with Zika.
Travel Precautions:
Check travel advisories and avoid travelling to areas with active Zika virus transmission, especially if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Community Measures:
Support local mosquito control programs.
Participate in community clean-up efforts to reduce mosquito breeding sites
