New Delhi: A study conducted recently has pointed out that cervical cancer risk is rising at a very fast pace in women of northeast India, demanding attention and prevention efforts from various stakeholders including pharmaceutical industries, healthcare providers, and policymakers. From a pharmaceutical perspective, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine plays a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer, and its widespread adoption is essential in reducing the incidence of this devastating disease.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Aravind Badiger, Technical Director BDR Pharmaceuticals, spoke about cervical cancer cases in India.
Cervical cancer can be prevented but it remains one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths among women in India. HPV is a common sexually transmitted disease and cervical cancer is one of the diseases that are caused by this virus hence vaccination against HPV is crucial. The HPV vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine, designed to prevent infection with HPV, and it works by introducing a small, harmless piece of the HPV virus, known as an antigen, to the body. This antigen helps to initiate an immune response that prepares the body to detect and deal with the HPV virus if it is ever encountered again.
The HPV vaccine has been found to offer good protection against HPV-related illnesses such as cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancer as well as genital warts. The effectiveness of the vaccine is based on the anti-HPV antibodies that are produced in large quantities to identify the HPV virus and neutralize it so that it cannot infect cells.
In northeast India, the threat of cervical cancer is rather high and the vaccine is one of the best options to avert the illness. However, despite its proven efficacy, the vaccine’s adoption has been slow, partly due to limited awareness and access to the vaccine. Pharmaceutical companies have a critical role to play in addressing these challenges, by developing affordable and accessible HPV vaccines and working with healthcare providers and policymakers to increase awareness and adoption of the vaccine. The condition can be effectively treated, especially when diagnosed and treated early.
In conclusion, the HPV vaccine offers a vital tool in preventing the disease, and its widespread adoption is essential in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer. By working together, we can increase awareness and access to the HPV vaccine, and develop innovative diagnostic tools and treatments that can improve patient outcomes and save lives.
