New Delhi: Young Indian batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi created history in the ongoing youth Test match between India U-19 and Australia U-19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday. Suryavanshi slammed an unbeaten 81 off 47 balls against Australia U-19 to become the youngest player to score an international half-century across any age group or format at the age of 13.
Suryavanshi, a batting prodigy, who hails from Bihar’s Samastipur, had earlier etched his name in record books when he became the youngest player to make his debut in the Ranji Trophy. The left-handed batter broke the record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.
Suryavanshi was only 12 when he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar against Mumbai earlier this year. Sachin made his Ranji Trophy debut when he was 15 years and 230 days old while Yuvraj was 15 years and 57 days old when he played his first Ranji Trophy game. Meanwhile, Suryavanshi managed to make his Ranji debut at the age of just 12 years and 284 days.
Youngest half-centurion in international cricket at any level
Suryavanshi, who had already played for the India U-19 team before making his senior debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy, rewrote history with his brilliant knock in the youth Test against Australia U-19 on Monday. He became the youngest half-centurion at 13 years and 187 days in U-19 cricket and in international cricket at any age level.
He broke the record held by the current Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored a fifty at the age of 14 years and 231 days for Bangladesh U-19 against Sri Lanka U-19 in 2013.

Suryavanshi’s 81 off 47 balls was laced with 13 fours and two sixes as he helped India post 103/0 in their first innings against Australia at stumps on Day 1. He was involved in an unbeaten 101-run opening stand with Vihaan Malhotra, who remained not out on 21 off 37 balls at stumps on the first day of the youth Test.
Earlier, the Indian bowlers bundled out Australia U-19 for 293 runs in their first innings. Samarth Nagraj and Mohammed Enaan were the pick of bowlers with a three-wicket haul apiece. Meanwhile, Suryavanshi is on the course to become the youngest centurion across all levels in international cricket if he manages to breach the three-figure mark against Australia on Tuesday.
